George, WC, - April 17, 2017. Wessel Kruger and his team finally opened Pause Coffee Roastery and Café on 8 April 2017.  It is situated between Wilderness and Sedgefield, at the popular Timberlake Village.  Coffee lovers can come and see public roasting demonstrations, as well as experience speciality artisan coffee prepared with world class equipment.

The Roastery boasts arguably the most advanced espresso machine in the world, the Sanremo Opera. The Italian produced machine was developed with a team that includes world barista champions. Another highlight is the Mahlkonig EK43 grinder, used for the espresso preparation. It produces unparalleled conformity of grind, resulting in smoother coffee. Furthermore, Pause Coffee Roastery installed a water remineraliser by German company BWT. It is also considered the best in the world, and the first one in South Africa. This ensures the ideal water composition for optimum aroma extraction when preparing the coffee.

The Roastery also offers delicious pastries, cakes, and light meals, including vegetarian and gluten free options. Stephan Henning, owner of the superb Zucchini restaurant, leads the food team.

The Pause Coffee Roastery and Cafe

Founded in 2016, Pause Coffee Roastery was born out of Wessel Kruger’s pursuit to create the perfect cup of coffee. Wessel, a mechanical engineer, experimented with micro-roasting at home for seven years. He finally invested in a commercial roasting machine. And no toy either - a computer controlled roaster with full roast profiling capability.  His passion led him to quit his job and become a full-time roast master.

The roastery was simply the logical next step to share coffee excellence with coffee lovers everywhere. Wessel says, “With some basic skills and equipment, everybody can enjoy the luxury of drinking good coffee at home.” The new website and online shop was also recently launched and include great tips for home coffee brewing. A coffee subscription service is also offered. This means you can have fresh coffee delivered to your door on a regular basis. It is a cancel-or-pause-anytime service and offers great value for money.

Currently, when Wessel meets a gifted young person he says, "We have the resources to make you a world barista champion, are you keen?" The most eager candidate currently seems to be Benjamin, his almost two-year-old son, after which one of the Pause blends are named.

Pause Coffee Roastery is the “home of speciality coffee in the Garden Route”. The word "Speciality coffee" in this instance is used in a technical sense. It refers to coffees grown in ideal micro-climates and graded 80+ on a 100-point scale, with little to no defects. Pause Coffee only makes use of ethically sourced green coffee beans. They also supply coffee wholesale to a growing number of good coffee shops and restaurants in the Garden Route area and beyond.
